In the medical arena, they usually will give you a cortisone shot; for some people, this may last a long time. For others, they start to wear off and for some, they don’t work at all. The side effects of cortisone can be devastating to your joints and muscles. It has been shown to speed up the arthritic process in the joint. So, if you get several of these shots in a joint you are promoting more arthritis. In a lot of patients, this is the cause of their pain, to begin with. So, essentially, some are simply throwing more gas on the fire.  It can also cause loss of muscle mass and it can cause muscle weakness. When you lose your muscle strength or they become weakened, this puts more stress on the joint because the muscle can’t do its job holding the joint in the proper position. This leads to more wear and tear on the joint and more arthritis, and this can be a vicious cycle.
